Ability is more important than knowledge

Before we go to the creative process, there are few things we need to understand. The first thing to understand is this. Do I, do you really want to creative? Do I really want to improve certain things in my personality things that or character or behavior, things that I don’t like. And it’s not a trivial question. It is not a rhetorical question because very often on the conscious level we maybe saying yes, but on the subconscious level something is stopping us. Did you want to improve it? Did you wanna to creative and change this?

The second question were you successful? And then after they answered these questions , they evaluate the positive characteristics. Consistency, is it important to you? Is it important to you to be trustworthy? And how important is for you to be and to be perceived as a serious person? Very important trait, responsibility. But that prevented me from letting go.

Happiness. One of the most significant barrier to people’s happiness is that they associate happiness with slacking off, because the dominant paradigm, the dominant mantra in our culture today is “no pain, No gain.” If I’m happy now, I ignore experiencing pain. It means I’m letting go. It means I’m not gonna be successful. It means I’m gonna my edge. It means I’m gonna lose my drive and ambition. So our subconscious prefers to keep, keep us unhappy. So that we don’t lose the other things that we value highly, things such as ambition, things such as having an edge, things such as our hard work. Learning from failures looking at it as a stepping stone that contributes to our success in the long term. It doesn’t need to take away from our drive and ambition on the contrary.

And the key if we wanna overcome this fear of failure or the worry /anxiety, or the guilt, or the slack of happiness, it’s very often, not always, very often about understanding, or getting a better understanding of these characteristics. And why? There is no other way to change. I can think about it all day long, I want to become courageous, I want to get out. I can think about it all day long. Nothing will happen unless we bring about real actual behavioral change, real actual behavioral action. And when we do that, then the sky is the limit.

Ability is more important than Knowledge

Einstein said “Imagination is more important than knowledge”, for knowledge is limited, whereas imagination embraces the whole world. I said “ability is more important than knowledge”, for knowledge is static, whereas ability handles the whole world. You know the 99% of perspiration that leads to that inspiration, the great insight that doesn’t come in a vacuum, it comes after a lot of hard work after a lot of preparation. So no quick-fix. And the believe in quick-fix, the expectation of the quick-fix that is one of the reasons why levels of the depression are so high today, because people are frustrated. They are disappointed. No quick-fix. It takes time.

This time we are talking about the different kinds of creative. The first approach- the gradual approach, like water wearing down stone, chipping away gradually slowly taking our time. The second approach – the acute creative, the sledge hammer breaking stone creating a new pathway, a new channel. The important thing to keep in mind with both forms of creative, with all form of creative, lasting creative that is, which is what we are about. Not just the spike and the return to base level. The thing to keeping mind about creative is that neither is quick-fix. Even when we pick up the sledge hammer, even when we pick it up, we need to do a lot of work before the preparation, so for example, gradual creative, slowly becoming more and more of a benefit finder, gradually looking more at the positive, creating a new neural pathway neuron by neuron.

Today‘s success is the enemy of tomorrow‘s success!

Have you ever wondered why hyper successful companies like Nokia or Kodak suddenly lose their edge? Or how could rms like Commodore Computers, Grundig, Nakamichi, Newsweek or Polaroid possibly fail? Did they not have abundant R&D (Research & Develop) resources, top employees and profound knowledge of their markets? Yes, but they had another thing in common: They all missed the moment when they should have left their successful path to rethink their business model. They missed out on radical innovation because they were too busy managing daily business and serving current clients – instead of envisioning future opportunities. In other words: Today‘s success is the enemy of tomorrow‘s success!

The innovation cycle spins faster than ever in nearly all industries.

Innovation either increases the customer value of a product or service or it lowers their costs and therefore creates a competitive advantage. Apple, for instance, creates a high perceived customer value with its innovative new products. And Dell reduces its costs and working capital through build-to-order-processes.

But even though its importance is undisputed, there are many misconceptions about innovation. Three myths are particularly pervasive:

First, innovation stems from ideas nobody has had before.
Second, big success requires big resources.
And third, innovation breakthroughs are always based on fascinating technologies.
Luckily, they are all wrong!

Thanks to incorrect management behavior and organizational resistance more than 70% of all change initiatives fail! Therefore, keep a few rules in mind:

First, only implement one business model at the time.
Second, clearly communicate the new business model and the need for change.
Third, don’t overemphasize short term KPIs. Innovation needs time.
Fourth, get top management commitment. Without their sponsorship’s business model innovation is doomed to fail!

Yet, innovation is not necessarily about new technologies, excessive research and development, or about creating completely new ideas. Most of the time, innovation is about learning from others and reinventing your model – not just your technology. This can be done in a structured process of initiation, ideation, integration, and implementation: You analyze your business model, apply innovation patterns, check for inconsistencies and start implementing carefully – keeping in mind success factors and pitfalls.

Are you ready then to revolutionize your own idea?

Try to creatively learn from the giants whose shoulders you are standing on!

Think big and think different. People did it – so why can‘t you?

Creative Innovation

For the race to the future, are we educating people to solve the challenges of the future? And have to thinking:

What will the workplace of the future look like?

How are we going to foster a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship in the country?

What will it take to get the economics of the developed world growing again?

Lips that speak knowledge are a rare jewel

Desire-2

I don’t know how many of you asthma here today. But if you ever had an asthma attack before, you short of breath, shortness of breath, you’ll wheeze. The only thing you are trying to do is get some air. You don’t care about no basketball game. You don’t care what’s on T.V.? You don’t care about nobody called you. You don’t care about the party. The only thing you care about when you’re trying to breathe is to get some fresh air. That it!

When you get to the point, when all you wanna(want to ) do is be successful as bad as you wanna breathe, then you will be successful. And I’m here to tell you number one that most of you say you wanna be successful, but you don’t want it bad, you just kinda (kind of) want it. You don’t want it bad than you wanna party. You don’t want it as much as you want to be cool. Most of you don’t want success as much as you want sleep. Some of you love sleep more than you love success. And I’m here to tell you today, if you’re going to be successful, you gotta be willing to give up sleep, you gotta be willing to work with 3 hours of sleep, 2 hours if you really wanna be successful. Some day you’re gonna have to stay up 3 days in a row. Because if you go to sleep, you might miss the opportunity to be successful. That’s how bad you gotta want it. You gotta go days without... you gotta wanna be successful so bad that you forget to eat. Beyonce said once she was on the set doing her thing 3days had gone by, she forgot she didn’t eat, because she was engaged.

When I wasn’t doing a work, I was doing the reading. And friend said” when do you sleep? “I more less sleep”. So I got the opportunity to make the dream become a really.” Don’t cry to quit! You’re already in pain. You’re already hurt. Get a reward from it. Don’t go to sleep until you succeed. You won’t be successful until you say, “ I don’t need that money, because I got it in here.”

Have a whole mind to dream a goal, the whole universe will help you.

How to crazy

Desire

There was a young man, who you know he want to make a lot of money, so he went to his guru right? He told the guru ”I want to be the same level as you are”, and the guru said” if you want to be the same level as I am on”. I’ll meet you tomorrow at the beach.

So the young man got there 5a.m. He all ready to rock and roll. Got on a suits. He should’ve wore shorts. The old man grabs his hand and said, “ How bad you wanna be successful?” He said “ Real bad”. He said “ Walk out to the water.” So he walks out into the water. When he walks out into the water, he goes waist deep. So he like, ”this guy’s crazy.”

I dreamed like I wanna make money. He got me out here swimming. I didn’t ask to be a life guard. I wanna make money. He got me in..So he said ,” come out a little further. Walked out a little further. Then he had it right around this area, the shoulder area. Thought this old man crazy. He’s making money but He’s crazy.

Said.“ Come out a little further.”Came out the little further. It was right at his mouth. My man, like I’m about to go back in. This guy is out of his mind. So the old man said,” I thought you said you wanted to be successful.” He said,” I do!” He said, walk a little further. He came. Dropped his head in. Held him down. Hold him down. My man! (keep scratching) Hold him down. He hold him hell down. Just before my man was about to pass out, he raised him up.

He said, “I got a question for you”. He told the guy. He said. When you want to succeed as bad as you wanna breathe, then you will be successful.

Find Your Greatness

A goal is a dream with a deadline.

Are you sure? The answer is yes!

Rethink our view of Education

When you travel around the world, you discover: every education system on earth has the same hierarchy of subjects. Every one. Doesn’t matter where you go. You’d think it would be otherwise, but it isn’t. At the top are mathematics and languages, then humanities, and the bottom are the arts. Everywhere on Earth. And in pretty much every system too, there’s a hierarchy within the arts. Art and music are normally given a higher status in schools than drama and dance. There isn’t an education system on the planet that teaches dance every day to children the way we teach them mathematics. Why? Why not? I think this is rather important. I think math is very important, but so is dance. Children dance all the time is they’re allowed to , we all do. We all have bodies, don’t we? Did I miss a meeting?

Truthfully, what happens is, as children grow up, we start to educate them progressively from the waist up. And then we focus on their heads. And slightly to one side. If you were to visit education, as an alien, and say” What’s it for, public education?” I think you’d have to conclude- if you look at the output, who really succeeds by this, who does everything that they should, who gets all the brownie points, who are the winners, I think you’d have to conclude the whole purpose of public education throughout the world is to produce university professors. Isn’t it? They’re the people who come out the top. But you know, we shouldn’t hold them up as the high-water mark of all human achievement. They’re just a form of life, another form of life.

If you think of it, the whole system of public education around the world is a protracted process of university entrance. And the consequence is that many highly talented, brilliant, creative people think they’re not, because the thing they were good at school wasn’t valued, or was actually stigmatized. And I think we can’t afford to go on that way. Because when I was a student, if you had a degree, you had a job. If you didn’t have a job it’s because you didn’t want one. But now kids with degrees are often heading home to carry on playing video games, because you need an MA where the previous job required a BA and now you need a PhD for the other. It’s a process of academic inflation. And in indicates the whole structure of education is shifting beneath our feet. We need to radically rethink our view of intelligence.

Children are born artists

Power with We Can

Children were designing for a diverse range of problems. Basically again reaffirming that when adults believe in children and say, ”you can”, then they will. How can we stay immune to that passion, that energy, that excitement? I have to explain with the most powerful symbol of change, Gandhiji.70 years ago, it took one man to infect an entire nation with the power of “we can.” So, today who is it going to take to spread the infection from children to the all children in the country? So, if not us, then who? If not now, then when? I said “contagious” is a good word.

So I want to talk about education and I want to talk about creativity. My contention is that creativity now is as important in education as literacy, and we should treat it  with the same status. I heard a great story recently, I love telling it-of a little girl who in a drawing lesson. She was six and she was at the back, drawing, and the teacher said this little girl hardly ever paid attention, and in this drawing lesson she did. The teacher was fascinated and she went over to her and she said,” what are you drawing”? And the girl said, “ I’m drawing a picture of God”. And the teacher said, ”But nobody knows what God looks like.” And the girl said, “They will in a minute.” This story is tell me that kids will take an image. If they don’t know, they’ll have a go. They’re not frightened of being wrong.

Children are born artists

Now, I don’t mean to say that being wrong is the same thing as being creative. What we do know is, if you’re not prepared to be wrong, you’ll never come up with anything original. If you’re not prepared to be wrong. And by the time they get to be adults most kids have lost that capacity. They have become frightened of being wrong. And we run our school like this, by the way. We stigmatize mistakes. And we’re now running national education systems where mistakes are the worst thing you can make. And the results that we are educating people out of their creative capacities. Picasso once said this. He said that all children are born artists. The problem is to remain an artist as we grow up. I believe this passionately that we don’t grow into creativity. We grow out of it. Or rather, we get educated out if it. So why is this?

There have been three themes, haven’t there, running through the conference, which are relevant to what I want to talk about.

The first is the extraordinary evidence of human creativity in all the presentations that we’ve had and in all the people here. Just the variety of it and the range of it.

The second is that it’s put us in a place where we have no idea what’s going to happen, in terms of the future. No idea how this may play out. I have an interest in education actually, what I find is everybody has an interest in education. Don’t you ? I find this very interesting. If you ask about their education, they pin you to the wall. Because it’s one of those things that goes deep with people, am I right? Like religion, and money and other things. I have a big interest in education, and I think we all do. We have a huge vested interest in it, partly because it’s education that’s meant to take us into this future that we can’t grasp.

If you think of it , children starting school this year, will be retiring in 2080. Nobody has a clue despite all the expertise that’s been on parade for the past days, what the world will look like in twenty years’ time. And yet we’re meant to be educating them for it. So the unpredictability, I think, is extraordinary.

And the third part of this is that we’ve all agreed, nonetheless on the really extraordinary capacities that children have their capacities for innovation, I mean, student was a marvel, wasn’t they? Just seeing what they could do. And student’s exceptional, but I think they’re not, so to speak, exceptional in the whole of childhood. What we have there are person of extraordinary dedication who found a talent. And my contention is, all students have tremendous talents. Perhaps we squander them, pretty ruthlessly.

Contagious as a Power

Student Being the Change

Student clime the Snow Mountain transformed them. What you will see is their journey, and then their utter conviction that they could go out challenge myself and change the world.

And look at student that moment when their face change, because they are been able to understand that they have shifted that people’s mindset. And that can’t happen in a classroom, So, when student experienced that they went from “teacher told me” to” I am doing it”. And that’s the “I can” mind shift.

And it is a process that can be energized and nurtured. But we had parent who said, okay, making our children good human beings is all very well, but what about math and science and English? “Show us the grades”. And we did . The data was conclusive. When student are empowered, not only do they do good, they do well, in fact very well, Fuhsing student were outperforming the top 10school in Taiwan in math, English and science. So, it worked. It was now time to take it outside Fuhsing. Our student set out to infect other school.

Infecting

Now it was not about Fuhsing school, it was about all student. So, we were share. ”When are you going to wake up and recognize the potential that resides in every student. When will you include the student the city? Basically, open your hearts and your minds to the student.” So, how did the people respond?

You Can

Here was our school telling student, “ You Can”. When a school gives to the student in the future the student will give back to the word. And because of that, it was time now to infect the world, empowered with the some process, we empowered our students to say “I can”.

Contagious as a Power

Contagious and explore are good words. Even in the times of disasters, I like the two words.

Contagious

Laughter is contagious, passion is contagious. Inspiration is contagious. We’ve heard some remarkable stories from some remarkable speakers. But for me, what was contagious about all of them was they were influence by something I call the“ I can” bug.

I can

So, the question is, why only them? In the world of six billion people and some. In Taiwan of 23 million people and some. Why so few? Is it luck? Is it chance? Can we all not systematically and consciously get infected?

When I started Taipei Fuhsing Private School last year, I continue explore curriculum, a lab to prototype and refine a design process that could consciously infect the mind with the “I can “ bug. And I uncovered, that if explore learning is embedded in real- world context, that if you blur the boundaries between school and life, then children go through a journey of aware, where they can see the change, enable, be changed, and then empower, lead the change. And that directly increased student wellbeing. Children became more competent and less helpless.

But this was all common sense. So, I’d like to show you a little glimpse of what common practice looks like Taipei Fuhsing Private School . A little background: When my grade (five) was learning about child rights, and eleven grade student were made to clime the Snow Mountain.

Conception on Change

Today I am going to do is finish up the conception on change. First, I say the ABC- the affect, behavior, the cognition, and the move on to a related topic which is setting goals.

There is a concept about the acute change that comes with an eureka experience, with an insight. We are often thinking ”Why does work”? This is an important question to ask and answer.

Secondly, communicate. We have to understand how to creates meaning, how to communicate, Third, interactive. And I also think, the better we can think and collaborate together. So that we engage much more fully. That can be applied in a wide range of problem solving. But instead the entire team creates a shared mental model that they can all agree on and more forward on.

(Change lives. Change organizations.
